The allozyme analysis was used to estimate the genetic diversity and population structure in Juniperus communis L. var. saxatilis Pall. and J. c. var. communis L. Nine populations were studied in Siberia, on Kola Peninsula, and in the Urals. Juniperus communis L. var. communis was found to be similar to J. communis L. var. saxatilis Pall. Eleven loci out of thirteen ones investigated showed polymorphism. The genetic diversity was higher than its average values obtained for the species with similar life history traits (P 99 = 73.5%). The average number of alleles per locus ranged from 1.8 to 2.5; the expected heterozygosity, from 0.160 to 0.226 (mean value 0.190) reflecting a relatively large effective size of the population. The interpopulation genetic differentiation estimated using Wright’s F ST was 3.4% indicating a significant contemporary gene flow or recent colonization of the territory studied by juniper spreading from the single source. According to the Mantel test, no correlation was found between the matrix of genetic distances D between the populations and the matrix of geographical distances (p = 0.33) demonstrating the absence of geographical structures.
