Estimation of the time when individual trees and half-sib families acquire stable rank position in progeny tests makes it possible to determine the optimal age best suited for estimation of genetic properties of trees with respect to their seed progeny. Individual trees and half-sib families in Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) stands may significantly change their rank position in the first 10–15 years of their life, whereas later on, their rank positions become stable. Starting from age class 2 (21 years and older), the rank positions of Picea abies families become relatively stable with respect to the growth rate. At the age exceeding the age of the final estimation of families in progeny tests (40 years for Picea abies), families may also change their rank positions but not so significantly. The group of half-sib families with average rates of growth is characterized by a more significant change in its ranking position as compared with the families from extreme ranking groups. Based on the results of the research, it is recommended that the genetic properties of Picea abies families in progeny tests in the North-West of Russia be estimated prior to the age of 20.
Key words: progeny tests, Picea abies, seed progeny, growth rate, growth group, differentiation, cluster analysis.
