The spatial variability of soil properties and the soil cover pattern was studied in a lichen pine forest in northwestern Russia. The surface podzolic soils of the study region are characterized by the high variability of their morphological structure, physicochemical properties due to the microrelief and diverse plant cover. The most variable are the contents of mobile phosphorus and potassium compounds. Acidity of these soils is constant. The phytogenic field of tree mainly affects the properties of forest litters.
