We documented the specifics in morphology and physicochemical properties of peat soils dominant on the western slope in Northern Ural. We show that in montane forest and alpine realms the peat soils are found under communities of two vegetation types of mires and boggy forests. We found that the soils have thin peat layer of 50-55 cm, low ash contents, acidic and strongly acidic pH, and base unsaturation. They were classified to oligotrophic peat soils (typical and gleyic subtypes), and eutrophic peat soils (typical and silty humus gleyic subtypes) based on eco-phytocoenotic pedogenic conditions.

Keywords: Northern Urals, vegetation, peat soils, physicochemical properties, classification and recognition of soils.
