We compared a set of indicators of potential and effective fertility of soils under plantations of the Siberian larch and the Siberian elm with wild lands on the shore of Shira lake, the Republic of Khakassia. Using catena technique of study we established the ecological functions of forests at neighboring topographical elements of watershed, slope, and foothill exposed to the lakeside. We compared the features of genetic horizons of soils and upper biogenic layer. We found positive effect of artificial plantations of the Siberian larch and the Siberian elm on dark accumulative carbonaceous agrogenic soil in the dry steppe of Shira. Biogenic accumulation of humus, gross nitrogen, calcium, elements of mineral nutrition, desalinization, valuable structural improvements were observed. High yields of aboveground herbaceous phytomass developed, which increased the soil protective function of the artificial forest phytocoenoses. Byocoenoses of wild land and the Siberian elm had maximal environmental resilience especially at the upper and middle sites of the catena.

Keywords: artificial plantations, catena, slope site, larch, elm, wild land, humus, structure, total salts, soil protection function.
