The CO2 exchange and formation of xylem were studied in Abies sibirica Ledeb. stem. The rate of respiration is related to the number of living tracheids in wood of developing annual rings. The functional dependence of the stem respiration on air temperature and humidity was not revealed. The respiration costs in the photosyn-thetic assimilation of CO2 by crown varied from 5 to 25% and were maximal in late June. The share of growth respiration was 80% of the total stem respiration.
