A new field method for measuring the nitrogenase activity of not cut nodules isolated on a living tree root is suggested. An exposition chamber was a plastic bottle (1.5 1) with a decompressor and resin stopper in the bottom for sampling. The chamber was hermetically closed. After the introduction of acetylene and propane into the chamber, 0.5, 1, and 2 h later, samples of gas were taken with a 100 ml syringe after preliminary mixing the gaseous contents of the chamber. The ethylene and propane concentrations were measured using a gas chromatograph. The nitrogenase activity was expressed in micromoles of ethylene per gram of dry mass of a nodule per an hour.
