The structure of the colored layer was studied in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seeds. Discrete seed variations by color are distinguished. Endogenic, ecological (by forest types) and geographical variability of the groups distinguished are described. The variations are concluded to correspond to the notion "phene". They may be used in phenetic investigation of natural Scots pine populations.
