ASSESSMENT OF SOIL SUITABILITY FOR GROWTH OF CONIFEROUS FORESTS SPECIES IN TUVA REPUBLIC

We studied the geography of soils suitable for growth of coniferous forests in Tuva Republic. Suitability and ranking of soils was based on the soil ecology of the species and available maps: Soil map of Tuva, forest map of the USSR and vegetation map of Russia. Contribution of soil factors to growth of light and dark coniferous species (Picea obovata Ledeb., Larix sibirica Ledeb., Pinus sibirica Du Tour., Pinus sylvestris L., Abies sibirica Ledeb.) in Tuva was estimated from analysis of soil and conifers ranges. We found high soil potential for growth of coniferous forests. 77% of soils are suitable for Siberian fir growth, and 98% of soils are suitable for Scots pine. However, forests currently grow on 44% of Tuva territory. Hence, we found high difference between the forest area and the area where they potentially could grow.
