We studied spatial and temporal variation of tree litter under decreasing technogenic pollution during the last 20 years in dwarf shrub-lichen pine forests in Kola Peninsula. The mass and fraction composition of tree litter at various stages of digression were measured taking the biogeocoenotic variability (location of a sampling site under or between tree crowns) into account. Although the emissions decreased during the last 20 years, litter mass tended to increase mainly in needles and bark fractions in forests under industrial aerial pollution. The reasons are weakening of trees by the recent pollution as well as the pollution in the preceding years, aging and growing phytomass of the stands. Mass ratio of dead to live needles of 0.6 in technogenic thin forests was significantly higher than 0.1 in intact communities. We show that total litter mass estimate doubled, and significant differences found for all litter fractions, when biogeocoenotic variability was taken into account. Hence, the spatial factor in tree litter formation is more precise indicator of changes in forests, dynamics of organic matter, and biogeochemical cycles.

Keywords: tree litter, pine forests, industrial aerial pollution, seasonal and inter-annual dynamics, spatial variability.
