МОРФОЛОГИЧЕСКАЯ СТРУКТУРА КЕДРОВОГО ПОДРОСТА НА ВЕРХНЕЙ ГРАНИЦЕ ЛЕСА

The vital status of Siberian stone pine (Pinus sibirica Do Tour) seedlings growing in different zones of the central Altai Mountains is assessed. The main factors responsible for the morphological structure of seedlings in high altitudinal mountain belts are revealed. One of the reasons is frequent damage of leader shoots. In plain taiga forests, terminal shoots are damaged by heavy snow; at the upper timberline, the reason for the death of a terminal bud are low winter temperature and early spring frosts. In the high mountains, the ratio between the height increments in leader and lateral shoots should not be considered as a diagnostic characteristic of the vital status of seedlings due to its high variation.
