The formation of small mammal population was studied in overgrowing felled areas in a blue berry spruce forest (Arkhangel’sk oblast) for 40 years. Relatively small amounts of felling residues over the clearings and high damage of the forest litter explain the fact that the population of small mammals has been formed on the 25-27 th year. The development of animal population was related to the restoration of the ground cover and the possibility of common voles to create primary elements of the burrow network. After ten years forest voles transformed this network and forced out common voles to not numerous refuges.
