Components of atmospheric emissions from the Baikal Paper and Pulp Mill were analyzed related to their phy-totoxicity. Furfural (C2H402), dimethyl disulfide (CH3SSCH3), and methyl mercaptan homologue (CH3SH) -ethyl mercaptan (C2H5SH) turned out to be phytotoxic components of these emissions. Dimethyl disulfide, even at very high concentrations, did not damage fir (Abies sibirica). Fir needles, being in contact with sulfurorganic compounds, accumulated sulfur intensely. The damages of needle chlorenchyma cells revealed in the tests were identical to those found in fir trees weakened by the emissions. During the winter period, CH3S2CH3 is absorbed by snow and preserved up to springtime. In spring, in the period of active snow melting, a drastic output of this compound to the atmosphere takes place. Being concentrated in trough valley under a steady inversion layer, this compound damage needles of Siberian fir trees.
