The interrelationships between the distribution and size of shoots in joint growing herbs and dwarf shrubs (Vaccinium myrtillusRubus saxatilisDryopteris austriaca,Gypnocarpium dryopterisCalamagrostis epigeiosMilium effusumStellaria holostea,Luzula pilosaMajanthemum bifolium, and Oxalis acetosella) were analyzed in a birch forest of the southern taiga. Local effects of birch stands and spruce regrowth were also taken into account. The influence of birch and spruce roots was estimated according to the total diameters of trees growing around test plots (3-m radius). Before the assessment of the shading effect of spruce trees they were grouped (ranked) according to their orientation by cardinal points with respect to the sample plots. The spruce trees south of the sample plots had the maximal rank. The sum of ranks of the nearest spruce trees characterized the shading of the plots. The correlation analysis revealed that asymmetric competition was the leading factor affecting the species of the herb-dwarf shrub cover. In most cases, the distrubution and size of shoots in the species studied negatively correlated with the indices characterizing effects of birch tree and spruce regrowth roots and the shading influence of spruce trees and of the large fern Dryopteris austriaca. Symmetric competitive relations did not affect the distribution and size of the species shoots.
